This 2019 Ford Ranger cam in with Engine light on.
Vehicle was scanned for codes with 2 codes relating to DPF faults recorded.
#P2463 and #P242D
A world leading The DPF Doctor assessment was performed. Yes the DPF was blocked and yes there was an exhaust Temp sensor fault. Although the cause of this fault was a little unusual. We do get rodent damage in Australia, but the wiring damage in this case was caused by the owners pup.
The sensor was replaced and DPF cleaned using the very high quality DC Lubricants Ltd 3 stage cleaning process.
Although this is one of the easier DPF assessments we have performed at VDS it is worth bringing your vehicle to professionals to deal with any DPF issues you may have. A DPF is very rarely the cause of a fault. We get to the initial cause of your concern. VDS is still the only DPF Doctor network member in South Australia outside of Adelaide.

Multiple problems can be caused by a failing IPDM. No cranking/No start, but ignition can be ON , radiator fan, fuel pump, lighting issues plus more. This over complicated fuse box is also incredibly fragile and new units must be coded correctly to your vehicle. The vehicle will not start until the IPDM is configured.

Nothing frightens a Triton............... More than a split turbo hose.
This vehicle came in for a world leading The DPF Doctor Assessment with the DPF light on the dash flashing and fault codes.
P2463 - Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction.
P252F - Engine Oil Level Too High.
During the inspection a turbo/intercooler hose was found to be split (the root cause of this vehicles DPF issue) and the oil level was high. DPF pressures were quite high and the DPF required a clean with DC Lubricants Ltd SoakPro and RinsePro products once the other issues had been rectified.
This vehicle is now back on the road with no more fault codes and DPF pressures exactly where they should be.

Once again the power of a scope for accurate vehicle diagnostics. Chrysler 300 SRT8 was brought to shop with possible transmission issue. A test drive showed an initial lack of power before picking up again and could possibly be a trans shift issue. Vehicle was scanned with the only transmission code a P2638 Torque Management feedback signal performance. Engine codes included
P0016 Cam/Crank timing
P0300Multi cylinder misfire
P0520 Eng oil pressure Sensor circuit
P0172 Fuel system Rich B1
P0175 Fuel system rich B2.
This was looking to be a cam timing issue.
Data from the Autel Ultra showed Long term fuel trims of-33%. Maxed out on this particular vehicle and still showing slightly negative trims on Short term fuel trim. Monitors were also showing cam out of sync and a value of minus 17 degrees.
The Pico was connected to the cam and crank signal wires to give a visual and measurable display of what was happening. This file was then compared to a known good example and measured out at around 16 degrees out of time retarded to where the timing should be. This engine will now be pulled down to have the cam timing corrected.

Not something we usually see at VDS but this Honda CRF300 is up and running again after coming in for a crank no start condition. The fuel pump was found to be the culprit.

2 vehicles. Same fault code. Different root cause. Both these vehicles run the 1KD-FTV Toyota engine. One a Toyota Hilux the other a 120 series Prado.
Fault code P0400 - EGR Flow.
Through a proper diagnostic process, the fault was located on both vehicles with a different cause for the fault code. Vehicle #1 had a seized EGR Cooler valve. #2 the EGR valve itself was intermittantly sticking both closed and open.

Mazda 626 with a reported intermittent A/C not working. Customer had been elsewhere and was told possibly a control panel problem, bring to an auto sparkie.
So back to basics. No fancy scopes and machines. Testing at the A/C relay showed powers available on both the control and load sides of the relay. Load tested and no issues there. Load side checked for continuity to ground through the A/C clutch using a test light to load the circuit. Clutch activated through multimeter setting with a nice healthy current draw and clutch activating. Control problem right? Nope. ECU provides a ground to relay control circuit. Load tested and relay can be heard clicking/activating. With everything going into and out of the relay the connector that only leaves the relay to be the fault. But its working, it clicks. These pictures show why there is no or limited current leaving the relay to power the A/C clutch. This relay looked original with the vehicle having over 300k on the clock.

Holden Captiva. P0010 fault code which indicates an issue with the camshaft position actuator circuit. This could be due to a faulty camshaft position actuator, a worn-out camshaft position sensor, problems with the wiring or connectors, a damaged timing chain, a damaged camshaft, or a faulty fuel injection system. A few quick tests, parts ordered and vehicle repaired and returned to customer within the day.

Last one for the year. Nissan Elgrand sent from another shop. Extremely low power and no fault codes.
This vehicle struggles to reach 40 km/h. On the test drive data was collected via scan tool with nearly all inputs looking as they should. What stood out was O2 sensor voltage at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) Bank 1 pegged lean Bank 2 pegged rich.
My next step is to break out the ATS Escope. 1st step is to check engine integrity through a relative compression test.
Pic 1 Red is the starter current with every upward peak a compression stroke. Yellow is ignition trigger for cylinder 2. Every 2nd peak is slightly higher than the other showing that 1 bank has slightly higher/lower compression than the other.
Now knowing it is a mechanical issue we need to work out the cause to enable a repair.

Pic 2 is In Cylinder engine cranking and we can already see we have 2 psi of back pressure which is too much, also bank 2 is not breathing properly as indicated by the lower intake pulls on every 2nd pull.

Pic 3 shows exhaust back presure at idle. It is now at 15 psi.

Pic 4 is showing the increase in exhaust back pressure as rpm increases.

This vehicle has a blocked catalytic convertor. A replacement will fix this car.

80 Series landcruiser Code 52 ECU is not getting a signal from the knock sensor. Bad knock sensor? Maybe. The wiring on this old girl was tired. After thousands of heat cycles the wiring had given up the ghost right at the terminal in the connector. With the correct equipment and training this vehicle was diagnosed very quickly. Repaired and with evidence to give confidence to guarantee the vehicle was fixed. The blue waveform is a bit fuzzy due to a poor ground but the matching peaks were enough to prove a fix.

This is why I have invested heavily into my business. Both in equipment and training.

The factory flowchart for this issue states to check powers and ground of the glowplug module and glowplug resistance. If they are good replace the glow plug module. If the same code comes back then replace the engine computer. If you dont know that probably appears to make sense.

No. We can do better.

This system has a feedback or diagnostic wire back to the Engine computer and is the focus of these captures. It is the red line. At first glance it is difficult to notice too much difference but the known good module starts off at system voltage and then cranking voltage is seen with a sharp drop. The faulty version is straight into a square wave pattern before the cranking voltage drops. It is during this cranking voltage drop that the fault code is setting. Using some advanced features of the ATS Escope makes it as plain as day the fault is occuring.
This is why I can confidently say the car is fixed.
